Meyer’s Dussack/Messer
May 11 - August 30, 2020
Instructor: Jeff Jacobson
In his 1570 treatise, Joachim Meyer presents instruction on combat with a dussack, a wooden training weapon with a short, curved blade and an ovular hilt, as the foundation for his practice with any single handed weapon and is built on the earlier foundations of messer (long knife) fighting in earlier German Traditions. This class will present the foundations of that instruction, including guards, cuts, defenses, moving and various devices on how to put this art into practice.
Weekly lesson plans will be released Mondays with live group video meetings on Thursdays 7-9pm Pacific to check in on how things are going. Students will be expected to submit videos of their practice so feedback can be provided. Students will also need a space to move/practice and some sort of dussack or messer simulator (a short stick, preferably 25-38” in length, is fine). Gloves are recommended, but not required.
